We metered water. We metered light. On Monday, we meter thought.

Claude Fable 5, the most powerful AI model you can buy, leaves subscriptions July 12. Pay per token after that.

Anthropic extended the deadline by 5 days, and even the extension was a capacity call.

And it's not just one company. In the last few months:

Google rationed Meta, its biggest AI customer.

Meta rationed its own employees.

GitHub moved Copilot to metered billing and devs burned a month of credits in hours.

"Intelligence too cheap to meter" was the promise. 2026 installed the meter.

Here's the thing though. Intelligence was never the scarce part. Electricity is. Chips are. Google is spending $180B on infrastructure this year and still can't serve demand.

So the edge shifts.

The builders who win from here aren't the ones with access to the best model. Everyone has access until Sunday. They're the ones who learned to spend intelligence like it costs something.

Starting Monday, it does.
