Fable seems overrated now that Kimi is out.

Moonshot's Kimi K3 topped Frontend Code Arena this week. Real developers voting on real builds, not a lab benchmark. It jumped 17 places in a single model generation, from number 18 to number one.

It's also a lot cheaper. $3 per million tokens versus $10 for Fable 5.

But the number that changes everything is zero.

In a week the weights go fully open. Not a rental. Not metered access. A download you run yourself, on your own infrastructure, with nobody's meter running.

A month ago the story was who gets to put a meter on intelligence. Which lab controls access. What it costs to rent a mind capable enough to do real work.

Now the best model on the most important developer benchmark isn't a rental.

This is the pattern the closed labs haven't fully priced in. Every closed model is one good open release away from being a commodity. The frontier stays expensive. The floor keeps falling out.

Honest take: it's one benchmark, frontend only, weights not yet verifiable, and Moonshot admits it trails overall. A launch-day number one is a signal, not a verdict.

But here's what I keep coming back to.

You don't need the best model in the world. You need one that's good enough, cheap enough, and yours.

The question for every builder right now isn't which lab wins.

It's why you're still renting what you could own.
